The southwest of Friesland has plenty of nice cities and villages that are definitely worth a visit. We’ve made a list of the best ones for you!
Sneek:
Besides Heeg, Sneek is also very popular among the water sports enthusiasts because of its location by the Snekermeer. But Sneek has also a rich history with many monuments, old cityscapes, several museums and, in case you love shopping, a nice shopping strand! As for food and drinks, there are lots of restaurants, cafés, and terraces where you can enjoy a nice meal or a cold drink.
IJlst:
IJlst is a cute little village and mostly known among the Frisians for its part in the “Elfstedentocht”. This cute little village is characterized by many historic buildings. The center has an elongated shape with beautiful linden trees. Have a seat on one of the cozy terraces in the village or in a great restaurant.
Hindelopen:
The picturesque town of Hindelopen is located directly on the IJselmeer. There will be lots to see in this village, like the beautifully painted houses, the characteristic facades, the people dressed in stylish historical costumes (klederdracht), the likhúskes, and the cute little wooden bridges.
Stavoren:
Stavoren is surrounded on three sides by the IJselmeer. Famous places of interest are “Het vrouwtjes van Stavoren” and the former city hall. Also visit the impressive electric J.L. Hoogland pumping station or one of the other buildings.
Workum:
Workum is one of the oldest cities in Friesland and it has a lot to offer. The famous Jopie Huisman Museum is a great example, but also in the cozy terraces you can still notice the rich history of this little city – not to mention, the nature around this city is great for hiking and cycling!
